Making 3D environments is fun. But there's one part that isn't fun: hunting for the right material! As cliche as that scene looks, unless you're good at Substance, matte painting or helicoptering over volcanoes, you previously couldn't make it! Coz up until now, there weren't any realistic lava materials online that we know of. Yes, it's coarse and it does get everywherebut it's a staple for environment building!

Whether it's a beach, an island, or a desert - you need high quality, tileable sand. And while we already have a sand collection, we've added some sand types that were previously missing from our library. When you're making a wide-open scene with grass that stretches for kilometres, a 1x1 meter grass texture just doesn't cut it pun intended.

Because when you tile something times, even the worlds best seamless textures will look horribly tiled. So we created something that we've wanted for years, but we couldn't find anywhere We've provided them in three common grass types, green, patchy and brown, so that you can easily painted over each other like the image above to make some gorgeous landscapes.

It's got unique textures you can't find anywhere else, patterns, designs, and most importantly PBR materials. Third-party software that generates maps like CrazyBump has existed for years.

But generating these maps correctly takes forever! But with Poliigon, you can say goodbye to third-party software, because we provide all the necessary maps with each texture. For a full demonstration, watch this tutorial. With a typical scene containing 10 materials, expect to save at least 3 hours by not having to generate them yourself.

Not to mention the cost of buying the necessary third-party software :P. Blurry textures are basically worthless, because it makes the material look slightly out of focus, ruining any realism. So we made a committed effort to produce the sharpest, highest quality textures available. When you want a closeup of a model, texture resolution matters.

And in my experience, the textures on most sites aren't large enough. So we made an effort to ensure most of our textures were captured at 6K, and some even as high as 24K! There's nothing worse than finding the right texture, but then not being able to use it because it's not seamless.

In terms of production, making a textures seamless adds significant overhead which is why most sites don't offer it for everythingbut we think it's worth it. The real world is filthy! Scratches, dust, smudges, residue and dirt, pervade even the most "clean" materials of the real world.

But it's surprisingly difficult to find these sort of textures online. The few that do exist are low res, non-seamless, or not available in a format that's useful for cg art.

CC0 Textures offers a library containing hundreds of detailed PBR materials with displacement- normal- and roughness maps in resolutions of up to px for photorealistic rendering. There is no need to log in, buy credit points or pick a commercial license, all assets are available for free and without any restrictions. The majority of all assets is available in resolutions from px of up to px - and sometimes even bigger.

Most materials are either created from the ground up in Substance Designer or photoscanned to ensure that displacement- and normal maps are accurate to the real world. Browse photoscans Browse SD-based materials. You can customize the appearance of these materials, export them in even higher resolutions if needed or save on resources by storing only the description of how to the materials instead of the full texture maps. PBR materials are only one building block of a good scene, you may also need some backdrops or 3D models.

Materials from commercial texturing sites almost always come with some sort of usage restrictions that prohibit you from redistributing the texture maps and sometimes even the renders. That means that you can share them whereever and for whatever purpose. This includes commercial use and the redistribution of the files themeselves for example as part of an open source video game.

The licencing is usually very lenient as well which allows you to use them on both personal and commercial projects. Browse Textures. Credits are the premium system this site uses. You purchase credits then use them to buy higher resolution textures as needed. Browse Texture Haven. It was formed by a 3D artist from the Netherlands who uploads all of the textures he creates for his work, all for free. The advantage of this site over Textures. This site runs the same way, offering huge resolution high quality HDRI textures for lighting your scenes.

And once again, it is completely free! Browse 3Dtextures. It also has some of its content as Substance Designer files so you can download them and make your own tweaks to get some incredibly unique textures. This site has its own subreddit and Discord servers so you can talk to the creators and ask them any questions you may have about their work.

Browse Poliigon. Poliigon is a premium texture site with plenty of variety to pick from. Its library is very large and covers a lot of categories but you need a subscription to get the credits needed to download anything. Something you need to bear in mind if you buy the hobby package is that you will not have the license to use the textures commercially.

You can just buy credits as a single purchase, though these are generally more expensive.If you've looked around online for textures, you've likely come across Poliigon. Their wide array of high quality textures are rich in detail, can be used across different 3D software and come with various map types to get your models looking much more realistic than they would otherwise.

Using Poliigon textures in KeyShot is pretty straitforward, but if you have any questions about how to do it, the team at Poliigon has put together two quick videos to show you how to use them. In a little under 8 minutes, you'll know which material type to use, where to add the textures and what tweaks to make.

Double -click the part to bring up the Material properties in the Project window. Then select Advanced from the Material Type drop-down menu. The Advanced material type has all the settings you'll apply the texture maps to.

After you download the texture from Poliigon and unzip the archive, you'll load the Poliigon texture maps into the corresponding texture setting. Here's how the KeyShot texture settings correspond to the Poliigon map types. The texture settings are located in the texture properties of the selected texture. If you have KeyShot Pro, the Material Graph will provide additional capabilities, settings and adjustments.

The first video covers how to make those adjustments. Part 2 covers adding surface imperfections. Here you'll add a new Diffuse material as a label which will act as a layer on top of the base material. A texture map is added as an opacity map to the diffuse label material and adjusted to better show the imperfections. We have more support for Poliigon textures in KeyShot 7, along with some additional Poliigon textures you'll be able to access in KeyShot.
